The Full 1850 Point Army and Display Board

     Well Last night I finally did it...I planned out an 1850 list that while not being a very competitive list would let me showcase a lot of very cool conversion ideas for my Counts As Wulf Boyz. Last night I painted the last model for the list. I included a lot of HQ models and a lot of different units. So this list was far from the usual redundancy lists that work so well in tournaments. Now I didn't care because this was a labor of love for me. Last year I went to the Warmasters Challenge, a 100+ person tournament in our area and while there I saw a lot of cool ideas and conversions. The coolest to me anyway was a Nid army that was based on a Zombie theme. So there were Corpse Carts, zombies, ogres and giants to represent various units. It was beautifully painted and I thought it was a very cool idea. So when I went home from the event last year I started planning my own Counts As army. Now I knew that the term 'Counts As' it seams is more and more becoming a dirty word in our hobby as far as tournaments go. It seems as tournaments get bigger and competition in these becomes more contested, and prize pools build that it seemed to me that taking a 'Counts As' army to an event would be like walking in with the plague.

     So I went about planning my army out to mitigate as many problems as I thought I might have. One of the biggest issues usually with 'Counts As' tends to be a models size and footprint on the table. People are worried that others are modeling for advantage. So I made sure that every model I used was the same size or slightly bigger then what it was to represent. For my Rhino and Razorback I actually just ork'ified up the Rhino and Razorback models so they keep the same table presence. Each of my infantry is the same size as a space marine (although wider). My models are all on the bases they should be including the Thunder wolves. My Thunder Wolf Lord is the same size as Cainis who at the moment is the only Thunder wolf model to compare.

     For my troop, to keep confusion down, only models with special weapons look different. Meaning, if a Grey Hunter has a power weapon, it is a two handed weapon he has over his head and it has a blue tint to it. Where as every other Grey Hunter only has one handed weapons. The Melta Gunner is the only model in the Grey Hunter units with a two handed gun, as well his Melta Gun has a bright yellow 'danger' tank on it. The Banner guy sticks out and my Mark of the Wulven guys all have Cybok body parts. My Blood Claws all have Swords, No Helmets and yellow and red markings, all the Grey Hunters have helmets, axes and red and black markings. As well each Wolf Guard has Yellow and Black markings (all these marking colors are right out of the Space Wolf Codex for those units). So I matched everything to the Space Wolf codex where possible. My Long Fangs all have Rokkit Launchers in place of Missile Launchers and they have White and Black shoulders. The whole army is painted in a Shadow Grey, just like a Space Wolf army.

     This being said, I made an 1850 list, painted to it and submitted it to the Warmaster Council for approval to bring my Counts As army to their event. Seeing some of the stuff last year I had no worries when I submitted my request. Little did I know there was a lot of back lash from last years events over 'Counts As' armies being confusing. So Da Wulf Boyz were judged to confusing for the event. The Council's request was that the Slugga's aren't Bolt Pistols and request that I change out about half of them per squad, along with any Shoota's to Bolters and the Rokkits to Missile Launchers. If I did these and a few other things I could bring the army.

     This brought a question to me, is my army that confusing, or have tournaments moved so far from the hobby aspect of the hobby we are in that counts as is dead in the tournament world. I decided I won't be making any changes to the army, I won't be attending this event I built the army for. I will however be conducting an experiment with the army. I am going to spend the next year, July to July, taking this army to as many events locally as I can. As well I am going to shop the army around to various big tournaments. I am going to e-mail the army to the various TO's of the big events (Adepticon, Nova Open, Astronomicon, ect...) and see if the army as it stands would be let into these events. I want to know is counts as dead to the tournament world? Along with this any event I go to I am going to speak to each of my opponents before and after each game with the Wolves and record their reactions to the army. I want to know is it as confusing as I have been told it is, did I spend a lot of money and time building a cool army that won't be able to see the light of day on a major event table?

Da Wulf Boyz, Display Board

Well I have been a bit burnt out on painting boyz so I thought since I need to keep pressing to get the army done, each day I need to get something done.

So today I did a bunch of work on the display board. I built this one out of the same foam as my other one for my Blood Angels. Which means that it can fit in my modular board in place of hte Blood Angels if I want.

So I painted this one first in black, then it has a dusting of two different greys on it.

Then I added the snow. In the picture I have just added it, and I'll have to wait a few more hours will I can knock off the excess snow. Also in the picture you can see the Ork Mek hut I am building for the board. It'll be painted up like a nice ork building when I am done with it. So here are some shots of it in the modular display board and then some WIP pictures.

Display Board

Hey guys me again. Sadly this isn't a Wulf Boyz post but rather something I have wanted to show off for a while. While looking around the net and listening to some pod casts a while back the Battlefoam x-board got announced, a nice portable display board that you can build different ways and paint up any way you wish. Now I sort of liked the idea but this brought on an idea in my head. Since I have several different armies I take to tournaments and they are all based different I wanted a way that would let me not have to build 3 or 4 different display boards and then find a home for them in my house.

So first I made a foam display board out of 1" foam. The first one I made was for my Blood Angels. So it came out like this (though it is still work in progress).



Next I took and extra piece of plywood I had laying around. When I had an 8'x4' sheet of plywood that was cut down to 6'x4' to use for my gaming table. This left a 2'x4' piece that I could cut down to a size a little bigger then the size of the foam. From there I picked up what is essentially door frame trim wood. I picked up trim that was 1" tall which made it the same height of the foam display board. I used wood glue and screws to screw the trim around the edge of the plywood. I then drilled out two 3" holes in the plywood, these are there actually to help with pushing the foam display boards out of the main display board piece. After all that I painted it with a gloss black paint and then used a gloss varnish on it to make it look really nice. It ended up looking like this.



After that I found that it was pretty heavy and sat flat on the table so it was hard to pick up. It looked like this.



So I went out to pick up something to make it easier to pick up the display board. I actually ended up with chair legs. So I mounted them to the bottom of it. So I then wrapped the edge of the foam display board with black duct tape and wrapped this along the side around to the bottom. This helps the foam slip into the wood section easier. With the legs and foam in it looks like this.





Now that is what it looks like so far. I like it the way it is at the moment. However now looking at it, I think I plan to add a shelf under it to hold things like dice, templates, books and the like. Till then, here it is.

Project Blood Angels

Ok so the army I will be taking to the Tournament even this weekend is pictured below. Now before you look at it, this is an experiment in the extreme. The last tournament I was 2 by two points and I took 10 Assault terminators, Mephiston and Sanguinor. This time I am taking this idea even further to the absurd.

So this list is 1850 and here it is on the display board.

Two Sanguinary Priests. So we'll see how this works. Last touranment the only long range killing power I had was only two assault cannons on razorbacks and I did just fine, so I took this idea a bit to the extreme. I am sure this idea probably will fail as I have pushed this idea a bit far but it'll be fun to try. I have another tournament next weekend as well, so I have a totally new idea for that event that I'll show it next week.

Project Blood Angels

It has been a while since I have updated this but I have been super busy I have 2 Tournaments in 2 weeks and one of them my gaming group is running so I have had added work for that. So I have just been so busy with everything.



So here is a bit of update with a little of everything added in.



First I have posted the pics of 3 of my objective markers. I finally finished the other two, the first is the valiant last stand of a Blood Angel vs a Deff Dread.







Second is the Banner Barer attempting to keep the Banner held high, even though he is heavily wounded.











Lastly, this will be an update on the display board I was working on. Here are some shots of the large steps I was working on for the end of the road.


























And here lastly are some shots of my hand made Sangunius Statue that will be on a pedestal that I am making that'll look like it is made of some marble like stone material.











There will be more updates coming. You can see why the updates have been few and far between I have been working hard on getting this stuff done.

Project Blood Angels

Well I had not planned to get a display board done for a while yet. However I did pick up some of the foam I needed for it and couldn't just let it sit there.

I finally settled on the idea I wanted to use for the board. In the Blood Angel book there are stories of course that speak about when Sanguinius came to Baal. The people of Baal soon erected a statue in memory of the event and of Sanguinius and the area is called Angels Fall. It is an area that is supposed to be a are that has a Sanguinius statue in it. With the recent fluff the Blood Angel home system is being attacked by both a splinter hive fleet of Leviathan as well as a Blood Thirster known as Ka'Bandha has assembled a huge war host and is attacking Baal. So I wanted to make a board that would show a Blood Angel army defending what they would consider a very sacred place. So my plan is to make a road leading up to the Sanguinius statue and then around that would go the army. I wanted to make sure the road had a Blood Angel symbol on it in some way. I found some coloured sand and fell in love with the idea of getting a Blood Angel symbol in the sand leading up the path.

So with Red, White and Black sand in hand...here are some work in progress pictures.



So first I drew out the road, you'll notice the road isn't exactly the same size at the top and the bottom. I will be using a slight forced prospective on the road so that it looks longer then it truly will be. So while standing back from the board the road actually looks a bit longer. I think it'll work. I drew out the Blood Angel icon on the road, used some watered down PVA glue and made the icon using the Red and White icon. I think it came out great.



After that I started to fill in the 'road' with the black sand.





Now I haven't filled in all the area around the icon because I have to be a little more delicate around it.

Also I wanted to build up a platform for the statue of course so here is my work on that so far.





Lastly, I am going to try to find lamps from the Imperial Sector Building sets to attempt to run some lamps along the board.
