The Ups and Downs of Converting: Part 1

Somedays out of the blue, a killer conversion idea will strike your brain. Happens to me quite alot, and it can be maddening haha! The conversion I am going to feature here is my count as Skulltaker on Chariot and its also an excuse to make a 2 headed Juggernaut. Little did I know it was going to be a bit of a headache! Tyranid sculpting is down my ally, but when it comes to metal, let the frustration begin! Here is the 2 headed Juggernaut in progress:

The hind end was a perfect merge, but the upper area has some issues. I need to bulk out the front legs, they are out of proportion. I also need to raise the back into that hump Juggers have. I have the bulldog look I am going for, yet it also looks like a turtle! Oh the curse of the perfectionist, how I hate thee! When the perfectonist kicks in, it's always good to take a break to let your mind refresh. If you don't, you may destroy your project!

The Jugger may be giving me a headache, but the rider is turning out nice. The loin cloth from the Plastic Daemon Prince kit makes a very nice cape! I also used the spare Bloodcrusher necklace to add a Khorne touch. The shoulder armour is made out of a Tyranid carapace bit with some green stuffed in detail. I might mirror it on the other side. Skulls on chains are plenty in the Bloodcrusher kit, so I have those hanging off his cape too. The head I wished I used a forehead with a rune in it. Also used the big fancy sword. That sword represents the rending rule for me and will glow a bit with hellfire.

And thus my next problem arises, how to mount the rider to the Jugger. I am probaly going to have to attach two chains of jewery chain to the ring in his hand. Then attach the two ends to the Jugger's collars. When based, the Jugger will be jumping into the air and hopfully wont look so flat in the end. Here is a size comparison with a Bloodcrusher:

When I get back to tackling this project, I will post up part 2 with how things turn out. If you have any ideas or comments, feel free to post them!

Korean Konnection - 3

Anyong Haseyo!

This is gonna be a quick one. Maybe I'll add more after work, hee hee!

I just wanted to show off some of my work in progress. Here are some Perry Minatures, pressed into the service of the Imperial Guard!

I think they will match really well with my Praetorians, red coats and all.

On the COBRA side, here we have a Veteran Squad with flamers, aka the Toxovipers. After all the fun I've had with Pete's, how could I not include them?

And here we have Sgt "Zartan" and his Veteran Dreadnoks. Outflanking meltaguns for the win!

So, my Guard is going to feature COBRA themed Mech, and an Infantry Platoon inspired by the old Britain minatures I used to play with when I was a kid. All in all, a very nostalgic, colourful and fun looking army... that also happens to play very well on the table.

Now I just have to paint it all, ho-boy!

It's Evolution Baby!

Yet another night of restlessness. I look at my Flying Hive Tyrant, and notice she's in desperate need of yet another touch up. The moss glued to her base is crumbling away and the base itself has not been touched up in years. Her wings are still the same old paintjob from the moment I put her together. This model has gone though countless touch ups and re configurations that it has quite a bit of history. I dug up some old pictures and I see how much this model has evolved over the years!

This Tyrant was my very first Warhammer 40K model and the first one I ever assembled and painted. I was even brave enough to dive into the Greenstuff! Here is a photo of the first spawn of Hive Fleet Cicada in all its bad photo glory! This was taken about 2-3 years ago. The wings were taken from the Soultaker figure by McF Toys.

Having no idea how the game worked and with codex in hand, I just went with what I thought looked cool. This is the first incarnation of the Alpha Tyrant of my fleet.

I began doing research on how people build their bugs, and found out about the 4th ed dakkadakka load out. I also touched up her paintjob, making the white look much cleaner then my previous newbie attempts of blending bleached bone with skull white, with a badly made green wash to boot! The new Citadel Washes also come out around this time, eliminating any trace of my horrid newbie wash. My Greenstuff skills have also improved, and I touched up the old GS work. I neglect to touch up the wings, they bare the same paintjob from the moment of this beasts spawning.

She was quite the terror on the battlefeild, the 4th ed incarnation of the dakkaflyrant was a monster, shredding anything in her path. When the 5th ed Tyranid Codex was coming around the corner, a big change hit the Tyrants stat line, and I was forced yet again to change her weaponry. The Bonesword and Lashwhip were no longer crap, and the Tyrants changes looked to be build more for close combat then the dakkaspam I was used too. The converted devourers were taken off, and eventually made their way to a magnetized option for my (nearly useless) Carnifexes. With the release of the Trigon kit along side the new codex, I grabbed a box and with the leftover talons, I finally had the perfect set of Scything Talons for my Tyrant! The other ones I just could not get to work and the smaller Trigon talons were just the perfect size!

The evolution from 4th to 5th ed was quite a change for my Alpha Tyrant. She was no longer the near invincible brute that could shoot and hack her way though legions of biomass. She took on more of a support role, but was still an able HQ slayer. She even had a bit of a fall when I dropped my travel box. Only her tail and some arms fell off.

This brings us back to my intro. Age was starting to effect the model, with the moss crumbling away and the creaking noise of glue peeling off the base. It was time for another touch up. Her base is now touched up and solid again, and finally I pay attention to those wings. It's funny how a nice touch up can breathe life back into a model! Touching up those wings made a huge difference, making her look ten times more bold! I also had to redo sections of her carapace to bring back that bold green.

She will continue to command my fleet, unless the Swarmlord wants to rear its ugly head. It's almost like cheating taking the Swarmlord over her in my games! She was always my main HQ until GW stuck in mr uber tyrant and changed old lore around... wait who else does that to their lore... *coughWorldofWarcraftcough*

As for Tyranid Evolution, if I EVER have to change her again, she is totally getting magnetized!

NEW Dark Eldar List. Musings

Photobucket

Ok, so after reading and reading more on the book there are a few notes:

Power From Pain is a great rule!

The Duke is one of the best characters in the book and I will be using him often. 2 rolls on the drug table, picking the one he wants. 2+ poison dual blades, that are power weapons on 5+, Shadowfield, Makes all Raiders, Venoms, and Ravagers able to deepstrike AND he makes the unit he is deployed with have all their poison weapons become poison 3+.

Best served with a unit of trueborn (elite warriors) with dual splinter cannon, all with splinter carbines (assault 3 18" weapons) and a raider with splinter racks, that allows all splinter weapons (except cannon) to re roll misses. Nasty nasty.

Cheers!

Project Blood Angels

So it has been a while since I have updated the Blood Angels. I do have another tournament this weekend and I am trying to get a new list done for that, we'll see how that goes, I am rushing through a Dev squad with Missile launchers and trying to get a Auto Cannon/Las pred done as well. However with none of that done yet and thus the army list not ready for photos I thought I would turn to some other items I have painted up for the army that won't be in this list but which I intend to use from time to time. So this week we'll look at all the diffrent Dreadnoughts the Blood Angels can use. First we have the Death Company Dread. This is the first one I have painted, I have another on the go. Both are made from the old Furioso metal kit.

Photobucket

Secondly we have my Librarian Dreadnought. This is made from a Forgeworld Dreadnought as well for the Force Weapon I used the Forgeworld Nemisis Dreadnought weapon. I only have one of these so far but I plan to pick two more up soon.

Photobucket

Next we have the traditional Furioso, again made from the old metal kit. I have two of these as well, this one is done, the other is about 95% done.

Photobucket

Lastly we have the Heavy Support Dreadnought. This one is made from the Venerable kit, because much like the Marines in my army that I have made sure are full of bling due to the fluff that Blood Angels take pride in the look of their armor I thought that Techmarines would take equal pride in the look of the dreads they take care of. I only have one of this kit so far, I have two old dreads that are years old and look terrible, they are fine to test lists with but will eventually be replaced with more venerables. Also in the mail right now are my Twin Linked Auto cannon arms from forge world for this guy. I plan to have 3 Rifleman dreads when it is all said and done. This guy can change both his arms out for various other types of guns.

Photobucket

For those keeping track I currently have 8 Dreads for my Blood Angles. I love these guys.

Project Blood Angels

Ok so the army I will be taking to the Tournament even this weekend is pictured below. Now before you look at it, this is an experiment in the extreme. The last tournament I was 2 by two points and I took 10 Assault terminators, Mephiston and Sanguinor. This time I am taking this idea even further to the absurd.

So this list is 1850 and here it is on the display board.

Photobucket

This army includes Mephiston.

Photobucket

10 Assault Terminators.

Photobucket

10 Assault Terminators.

Photobucket

8 Man Assault Squad with Rhino.

Photobucket

8 Man Assault Squad, with Rhino.

Photobucket

9 Man Assault Squad, with Rhino.

Photobucket

Two Sanguinary Priests. So we'll see how this works. Last touranment the only long range killing power I had was only two assault cannons on razorbacks and I did just fine, so I took this idea a bit to the extreme. I am sure this idea probably will fail as I have pushed this idea a bit far but it'll be fun to try. I have another tournament next weekend as well, so I have a totally new idea for that event that I'll show it next week.

The Korean Konnection - 2

Anyong Haseyo!

The mail came in today, and with it came my COBRA Rattler, er I mean, my Valkyrie. A big thank-you to Pete for sending it to me, as well as my SGU t-shirt and some other goodies. Watch for the SGU logo representing in future installments.

Work on the COBRA Guard progresses well. Here is a group shot of my finished models.
(Yes, that is a South Korean flag in the background.)

So far we have the 40K equivalent of the Nightraven, Rattler, Thundermachine, HISS II, HISS III, IMP, Crimson Guard and Destro!

I'm particularly pleased with how the planes have turned out.

My plans to use Death Korps of Kreig as COBRA Vipers has been delayed, for the time being. Meanwhile, I'll convert some more Cadians to the cause. One thing that is really setting me back while in Korea is the lack of options. There is only one store. They only stock the current GW line. If anyone has old or used models, I rarely hear of it. Suffice it to say, it's hard to find meltagun and plasmagun armed guardsmen.

So I guess what I'm saying is, Darren wants OOP guardsmen, especially with melta / plasma for Christmas! (I've already got a line on a platoon of Praetorians... mwahahaha!)

Otherwise, my time abroad passes passably well. Mom sent me some more things from home, including Horus Rising by Dan Abnett. I already read it (ooops Mom!) but what the hey, like I don't have time to read it again!

All the best to the rest of the SGU! Wish I could be there for the Mike Mudd Tournament, but all my best wishes go with you for a great event. Now, to return to my daily affirmations...

"Must not start another 40k army.... (smack!) Must resist High Elves... (smack!) Must not make a second Nob Biker squad... (smack!)"

This could take a while... Cheers!

Project Blood Angels

Well guys, Ridvan and I went to the Warmasters Doubles Tournament. There were 54 teams, so 108 players. This is the biggest event I have ever been to. This was such a blast, so many players, so many armies. The skill of the people was just so good and the painting and modeling on some of those armies was amazing. Ridvan and I only really had 2 weeks to plan for this event which isn't a lot of time given that some plan a few months ahead. I was going because this would be my first time and I just wanted to play in a huge event. Ridvan brought his Dark Eldar and was the only Dark Eldar player out of 108 which was funny in itself. I took my Blood Angels.

Game 1 VS. Imperial Guard and Blood Angels

Photobucket

This game was a learning curve for Ridvan and I as we hadn't tested our armies at all. This added with some pretty below average rolls with things, like my Pred not being able to hit or kill anything. As well as the first game going a bit slow stopped us from being able to pull out anything other then an almost draw. The the funniest moment was Dark Eldar warriors charging and holding up the 'flag holder' squad which was the primary objective.

Photobucket

We came in at 19 points for the game, they came in at 22 so it was very close and very fun.

Game 2 VS Tau and Space Wolves

They were running with two Rune Priests both with living lightning and 4 Broadsides with Railguns so we were pretty sure the Raiders and Ravagers would die fast. However we decided that I was just going to totally rush the Tau, and force the Space Wolf player to defend the Tau player. This did work for a while and left the Dark Eldar to hold the objectives. On top of it all this mission had objectives that you placed then they scattered. We got really lucky as 2 of the objectives scattered towards our side of the table (we were playing table quarters) and on the last turn the 5th objective actually scattered onto the one Dark Eldar troop squad. We tied the secondary on this though. So we won the primary, tied the secondary and won the tertiary. This put us in really good position going into lunch break.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The first two pictures show how aggressive I was in moving my forces right into the Tau lap. The last you can see just how close the two objectives landed together and if you look hard you can see they are about an inch from the side of the board.

Game 3 VS Orks and Orks

This game was so fun. This was again hoard Orks lead by Ghazzy. This was the one army we thought we would have the most trouble with. However with Dark Eldar and Blood Angels we were able to out speed the orks who were almost all on foot. We took the game in the last turn. In fact we got the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary all in the 5th turn. Primary was kill points, we got two kill points in the last turn as the Dark Eldar were able to hit the Gretchen Mob and Gretchen Cannon Crew in one assault and end its assault on the Ork objective and in terrain which is important. This, added with fast Rhinos, and Fast skimmers let us get two more troop squads into terrain. Then our other fast vehicles were able to contest terrain which is important. So the Primary was kill points, which we were tied until turn five, the secondary was to control terrain with troop, last turn we grabbed three pieces of terrain, the orks held two which we contested. And Tertiary was hold an objective in a deployment zone, we left ours alone and the one Warrior squad was able to kill the Gretchen holding the Ork one and finish the game holding it. In one turn we went from losing the game to a total victory, we were one point from a perfect game.

Here are some pictures of the Ork Hoard.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Game 4 VS Orks and Tyranids

So we sit across the table from the Ork and Nid player and expect another hoard. Then I watch as the Nid player deploys 6 models. The Ork player deploys 40. The nid player was playing 2 Trygon Primes, a Tirvigon, a Guard unit and a bunch of Genestealers. The Ork player had 20 Shoota boyz, 10 Lootas and 750 points worth of Nob Bikers. In this one the Primary was to lose the least kill points but one of the team members had to pick that. So I took that, the Secondary was to have a unit hold a flag and tertiary was to get units into your opponents deployment zone and the Flag unit would be worth 3 points for this. This was another game that we won in the last turn. We tossed a LOT of things into the Nob Bikers and for 4 turns kept trying to use Horrorfexes and Fear the Darkness on them and Finally we were able to pin them on turn 4 and make them run on turn 5. In the last turn the Archon was able to claim the last kill point we needed to get us the win here, as well as the Bikers contested the opponents flag unit and of course turbo boosted the Warrior squads Raider with the flag into the Opponents Deployment zone to get the tertiary. So in the last turn again we pulled it off an got near perfect points for our last game. Since I was the one trying to save kill points this made for a funny point in the game where a squad of Dark Eldar Warriors stood off in front of the Nob Bikers to make sure I couldn't get charged.

So the first picture is of the army we faced.

Photobucket

The huge Nob Biker host.

Photobucket

One of the funniest moments, Dark Eldar Warriors ready to die for my Blood Angels lol.

Photobucket

And lastly the best thing you could ever see on the table, the HUGE nob Biker mob running in fear!

Photobucket

So with those games under our belts I felt we did pretty good but with 54 teams who knows where we stood. However when the smoke cleared we won best General. We were second place over all and we had the most battle points we were just behind on some of the soft scores. In fact we were only 2 points out of first place. So for our first time at the Warmaster doubles I am very proud of our team.
